DraftKings has solidified its position as the leading online casino in West Virginia, reporting a staggering $770 million in revenue for Q1 2023, marking an impressive 84% increase from $417 million in the same quarter of 2022. This announcement was made during the company’s earnings call on Thursday, where CEO Jason Robins proudly stated that DraftKings has claimed the title of the top iGaming operator in the state, capturing an estimated 26% market share of gross gaming revenue (GGR).
Robins remarked, “On the iGaming side, we’ve been chasing down BetMGM. And for the first time, in Q1, we’re able to pass them for number one market share in iGaming, which we’re very proud of.” Additionally, DraftKings’ CFO Jason Park highlighted that the company has surpassed Q1 expectations, raising its revenue guidance for the fiscal year 2023 from $2.95 billion to $3.185 billion. Furthermore, the adjusted EBITDA guidance midpoint improved from -$400 million to -$315 million, with the company anticipating a break-even adjusted EBITDA by the end of the second quarter.
Growth Amidst Competition
The growth of DraftKings aligns with the overall expansion of the iGaming and online sports betting markets across the nation. As new markets emerge and competition intensifies, consolidation occurs organically rather than through mergers or acquisitions. Recent developments in Massachusetts, where online sports betting was legalized on March 10, provide a clear example. During the initial three weeks, DraftKings and FanDuel collectively accounted for 80% of the total handle of $568.1 million, with DraftKings alone generating $257.6 million.
Park noted the strong momentum in the industry, which has facilitated successful launches in states such as Massachusetts, Ohio, and Maryland. National advertising efforts during the previous year, particularly around the football season, have also played a significant role in attracting early sign-ups, contrasting with trends observed in 2020 and 2021.
While FanDuel maintains its status as the leading sportsbook in the United States, DraftKings has effectively leveraged its local presence in Massachusetts to gain an advantage. “I think New England in particular, we tend to love our own here,” Robins stated. “So we feel like that was a really good angle for this market, and it worked.”
A Challenging Landscape Ahead
In West Virginia, where online casinos and sports betting are legal in only six states, DraftKings has emerged as a dominant player. Unlike other markets where BetMGM and FanDuel lead, DraftKings has claimed the top spot in iGaming. The West Virginia Lottery does not provide individual operator revenue figures, but DraftKings is the sole iGaming operator affiliated with Hollywood Casino, while FanDuel and BetMGM operate under The Greenbrier’s license.
Despite DraftKings’ success, the company is keenly aware of the competitive landscape, particularly regarding FanDuel. Robins emphasized that the company does not take its position for granted and remains vigilant in a fiercely competitive environment. “First, we don’t take anything for granted. So we assume that there’s always going to be a very competitive market and that we don’t assume we’ve won anything or that we have anything that we can bank on yet,” he said.
Robins indicated that FanDuel provides a significant benchmark, much like BetMGM did in iGaming. As DraftKings refines its strategy through launches in over 20 states, the company is also expanding its live betting and same-game parlay offerings, further enhancing its revenue streams.
Despite the fierce competition, Robins expressed confidence in DraftKings’ innovative capabilities. “We always have to be serving the customer and innovating and creating new products and new features,” he noted. “And over time, we believe that that’s the key to driving loyalty … just best product, best customer experience.”
While the next year or two may present challenges for DraftKings in overtaking FanDuel, the company remains poised to maintain a strong presence in the market, making it a formidable contender in both iGaming and sports betting.
