The “VOTE YES! Live! Casino Resort” campaign group recently launched a website alongside a new office to encourage Petersburg residents to support the construction of a casino in the city. Using the hopeful slogan “I Believe in Petersburg,” the campaign highlights the economic opportunities the casino would bring. Ja’Scotta Jefferson and Preston A. Page, campaign co-chairs, emphasize the potential for job creation, tax revenues, and overall economic development that a new Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia could bring to the city.
With the referendum set for November, voters will decide whether they want a new casino, a decision that could lead to a temporary casino being built as early as next year. After twice rejecting a casino in Richmond, state lawmakers gave Petersburg the opportunity to vote on the project. If passed, the plan, a collaboration between Bruce Smith Enterprise and The Cordish Companies, would launch immediately. Virginia’s online casinos remain illegal, but sweepstakes and social casinos offer a legal alternative using virtual currency.

Economic Boost and Job Creation at the Forefront of Casino Proposal
The campaign group argues that approving the casino would lead to a significant economic boost for Petersburg. Over the first decade, the casino project is expected to generate $2.8 billion in economic stimulus, $504 million in tax revenues, and $802 million in economic benefit during the construction phase. With more than 7,500 new jobs anticipated, the campaign touts average salaries of $70,000 with benefits, aiming to win voters with the promise of good-paying positions and improved local infrastructure.
Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham is a strong supporter, framing the casino as a vital step toward better schools, safer communities, and a stronger local economy. Zed Smith, COO of The Cordish Companies, emphasized that the company is committed to providing residents with all the information they need to make an informed decision, promoting transparency in the lead-up to the vote.
The campaign’s Aug. 15 office opening featured a variety of promotional items, including T-shirts, buttons, and yard signs, as the group ramped up efforts to spread its message and encourage voter support for a brighter future in Petersburg.
