DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A devastating incident occurred early Friday morning when a 12-year-old girl, who was peacefully sleeping in her bed, was fatally injured by gunfire as shots were fired into three nearby homes, according to local authorities.
The reason behind the shootings remains unclear, with Dayton police Maj. Brian Johns stating that the investigation is still active. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported. Preliminary findings suggest that at least two individuals may have been involved in the gunfire.
Investigation Underway as Community Mourns
The shots rang out around 1 a.m., leading police to recover over 30 rifle casings from the scene. The bullets were fired from the street towards the homes, all of which are in close proximity to one another and sustained multiple hits.
The young girl, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was in an upstairs bedroom at the time of the incident. Her father and 11-year-old sister were also present in the home but fortunately were unharmed. The police have not confirmed whether anyone was inside the other two residences when the shots were fired. The community is left in shock as investigators work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
