Nevada’s casinos have achieved remarkable success in gaming revenue, marking July as the 29th consecutive month in which they surpassed the $1 billion mark. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB), the 439 licensed casinos in the state amassed an impressive $1.4 billion in winnings from players during July, reflecting a significant 6.69% increase compared to the same month last year, when revenues exceeded $1.3 billion.
This record-breaking performance is particularly notable given the reduced number of casinos reporting revenue; there were 14 fewer casinos this July compared to the previous year.
Southern Nevada’s Revenue Surge
A significant contributor to this revenue surge is the southern region of Nevada, particularly Clark County, which accounted for a substantial portion of the total earnings. Clark County casinos reported a remarkable $1.207 billion in revenue for the month, a 7.5% increase from July 2022. The Las Vegas Strip alone set a monthly record, generating $834 million, which represented a 7.95% rise from the prior year. Downtown Las Vegas also experienced a strong performance, with an 8.91% increase in gaming revenue, bringing in $65.3 million.
One of the standout factors driving this increase was a dramatic rise in baccarat winnings, which soared to $193.3 million, a staggering 40.5% increase from July 2022. Baccarat emerged as the leading revenue generator among table games, with blackjack following closely behind.
Slots Continue to Dominate
Slot machines maintained their dominance in the Nevada gaming landscape, contributing $890.8 million in revenue—making it the third-highest monthly total ever recorded in the state. Interestingly, while online gambling options remain limited to a single poker room, the Vegas Strip casinos achieved their highest-ever slot machine revenue for a single month.
On the sports betting front, Nevada sportsbooks reported $408.2 million in wagers during July, marking a 2.7% decline from the previous year. However, a 6.2% increase in the hold percentage offset this downturn, resulting in a significant 55.7% rise in revenue to $25.3 million. Notably, approximately 65.7% of all sports wagers were placed through mobile devices, highlighting the shift in how bettors engage with the market.
Increase in Visitation and Hotel Occupancy
The uptick in gaming revenue coincided with a modest increase in visitors to Las Vegas, with 3.57 million people arriving in July—an increase of 1% compared to the previous year. This rise in tourism contributed to hotel occupancy rates reaching 85.2%, the highest for July since the pandemic began. The average daily room rate also saw a 1.7% increase, averaging $163.14, although there was a slight disparity in rates between the Vegas Strip and downtown properties.
Non-Gaming Revenue on the Vegas Strip
It’s essential to note that the revenue model for casinos on the Vegas Strip diverges from those in other regions. For nearly 25 years, non-gaming revenue has consistently outstripped gambling revenue in this area. In 2022, only 37.2% of the total revenue from Vegas Strip casinos came from gambling activities. This trend is indicative of a broader shift, where hotels and dining experiences contribute significantly to overall earnings.
In 2022, hotel rooms accounted for 27.3% of non-gaming revenue, while food and beverage sales generated 22.3%. Despite the impressive gaming revenue figures, slot machines still accounted for 57.3% of overall gaming revenue on the Strip, underscoring their continued popularity among patrons.
The Role of Sports Betting
While sports betting remains a relatively small segment of the overall gaming revenue—comprising only 1.2% of total revenue—it still plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall casino experience. Sportsbooks contribute to ancillary revenue streams, such as dining and entertainment, and events like football games and March Madness are pivotal in shaping casino marketing strategies.
Despite its modest share of total gaming revenue, sports betting in Nevada is on an upward trajectory, reflecting the evolving landscape of the gaming industry in the state. As the gaming market continues to grow, Nevada’s casinos remain a key player in the national gambling scene, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in a changing environment.
