LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A tragic incident occurred on Sunday at Churchill Downs when a horse succumbed to injuries sustained during a race, marking the eighth fatality in a concerning trend at the famed Kentucky Derby venue.
Rio Moon, a 3-year-old colt trained by Dale Romans, suffered a catastrophic injury to his left foreleg just a few strides after crossing the finish line, as noted in the Equibase chart for the sixth race. Despite being ridden by Martin Garcia, Rio Moon was unable to recover and was ultimately euthanized. The colt had a challenging racing career, finishing winless in six attempts and accumulating earnings of only $11,621.
Ongoing Safety Concerns at Churchill Downs
This recent incident adds to a troubling series of fatalities at Churchill Downs, which included two horses that were euthanized following injuries incurred during races on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 6. In total, five horses suffered fatal injuries in the days leading up to the Derby, during both training and racing sessions.
The situation has led to heightened scrutiny within the racing community, particularly after trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was suspended indefinitely by Churchill Downs during Derby week. His suspension followed the unfortunate deaths of two of his horses, which collapsed on the track. In addition to this, Kentucky racing officials made the decision to scratch his Derby entry, Lord Miles, from the race, further highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in the sport.
