Foxwoods Resort Casino, operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in Connecticut, proudly commemorated its 30th anniversary in mid-February. This significant milestone was marked with a ceremony that not only celebrated three decades of success but also announced ambitious expansion plans for the future.
A Memorable Anniversary Celebration
The 30th anniversary festivities at Foxwoods were nothing short of spectacular. The celebration kicked off with a ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolizing the casino’s impressive journey over the years. In the spirit of giving back, Foxwoods launched numerous giveaways throughout its anniversary month, treating guests to exciting prizes.
During the anniversary week, the casino gave away a remarkable $30,000 each day, totaling $200,000 in cash and prizes for visitors throughout February. The event featured comedic performances from renowned entertainers like Jo Koy and Jim Norton, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Additionally, Foxwoods introduced Double Bonus Slot Play Fridays, enhancing the gaming experience for its patrons.
As part of its commitment to community support, Foxwoods pledged to donate $30,000 monthly to various charities, with February’s donation benefiting the United Way. CEO Jason Guyot expressed enthusiasm for the year ahead, stating, “Today marks the beginning of a spectacular yearlong celebration. We look forward to welcoming guests of all ages to experience the wonder of it all.”
Expansion Plans for the Future
In addition to celebrating its past, Foxwoods unveiled plans for a significant expansion during the anniversary event. Among the upcoming projects are:
- A revamped main entrance to the resort.
- A brand-new High Stakes Bingo Hall, set to open in the spring.
- The Rainmaker Expo Center, designed to host concerts and trade shows, is scheduled to open in the fall.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of the expansion is Foxwoods’ partnership with Great Wolf Lodge. Groundbreaking for an indoor water park, hotel, and family entertainment center is slated for June, with the project expected to be completed by 2024.
This partnership will enhance Foxwoods’ appeal as a family-friendly destination, with Guyot stating, “Foxwoods will become family-friendly on a massive scale. It will be on 15 acres adjacent to Foxwoods, not directly a part of Foxwoods. It will be a huge driver of foot traffic.” This initiative aims to provide local and visiting families with a year-round getaway beyond the casino experience.
Benefits of the Expansion
The expansion is anticipated to create new job opportunities and contribute to the state’s revenue. Since opening in 1992, Foxwoods has generated over $4 billion in slot revenue taxes for the state. In addition to gambling taxes, the casino also contributes through restaurant and hotel taxes, further bolstering the state’s economy.
This ambitious expansion comes after a challenging financial period for the casino. A decade ago, Foxwoods faced significant debt, leading to headlines describing the casino as “fighting for its life.” However, with strategic initiatives and its prime location between Boston and New York City, Foxwoods has rebounded and thrived.
Reflecting on the journey, Guyot stated, “First there was Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and then Foxwoods. Now, no one in the Northeast, or even in the country can compete with us.” He expressed optimism about the future, hoping that the expansion will bring both profit and success for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the state of Connecticut.
“As we look ahead to the next chapter of Foxwoods, I am proud to celebrate this milestone alongside The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Foxwoods team members, our beloved guests, and the local community.”
