In March, Turpentine Creek took in 35 big cats from Big Cat Rescue, an organization that played a significant role in dismantling the operations of Joe Exotic, the infamous figure from “Tiger King.” The new cub, affectionately named Fred, is described in a press release as “energetic and playful,” radiating an “innate zest for life.” Although details about Fred’s backstory remain undisclosed, his arrival at the refuge marks a significant milestone. It is the first rescue operation conducted by Turpentine Creek since the enactment of the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in December 2022. This legislation makes private ownership of big cats illegal, although individuals who already possess these animals are allowed to register them with federal authorities until June 18.
