HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — As tax season unfolds in Alabama, many are eager to know how long it will take to receive their annual tax refunds.
According to the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR), the processing time for tax refunds largely hinges on when and how a return is filed. E-filing significantly accelerates the refund process compared to submitting paper returns. Generally, if you file an error-free return in January or February, you can expect your refund processed by March or April. However, delays can occur if you wait too long to file.

What to Expect for Your Tax Refund
- First-Time Filers: New filers should anticipate longer wait times, typically around 10 to 12 weeks after filing, as their information must be entered into ALDOR’s system.
- E-Filers: Those who file electronically can expect to receive their refunds within eight to 10 weeks after receiving a filing acknowledgment from the state.
- Paper Filers: Refunds for paper filings generally take between eight to 12 weeks to process.
Be aware that refunds may be further delayed if there are any issues with your filing or if ALDOR requests additional information from you.
Refunds are expected to start being released as early as March 1. This year’s tax season in the United States runs from January 23 to April 18.
